Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York Celebrates Earth Day!

HALFMOON, NY (04/13/2012)(readMedia)-- Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) is celebrating Earth Day by participating in several events at the Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau on April 14th from 11:00am-1:00pm*.

The girls will spend the day learning about recycling, different types of pollution and ways to help reduce our carbon footprint. The Henry Hudson Planetarium is hosting a show on light pollution and how it affects our ability to view the night time sky. Additionally, there will be gardening and other hands on activities to show how to use recycled newspapers as a planting technique, as well as how gardens help the environment. CDTA will be on hand showing the girls one of their hybrid buses so they can learn about this environmentally friendly and smart method of transportation.

Our Council and its members' commitment to protect the environment is part of a global initiative, which is The Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) Forever Green 100th Anniversary Take Action Project. This project is an effort to improve the environment and protect natural resources. GSUSA has asked Girl Scout members to select a month to lead a project, and then make a yearlong commitment to protect the environment by either reducing waste, saving energy or creating rain gardens, which will increase green space, wildlife habitats and improve water quality by reducing water-borne pollutants.

During the month of March, GSNENY members made the commitment to reduce waste. They learned about the effects of waste on the environment, and discovered ways to reduce waste. Members along with their families and friends switched to using reusable bottles and bags and recycled all of their aluminum cans.

Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York serves 11,000 girls and 5,000 volunteers throughout 15 counties: Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Columbia, Greene, Schoharie, Montgomery, Fulton, Washington, Warren, Hamilton, Essex, Franklin & Clinton. Service Centers are located in Albany, Queensbury and Plattsburgh with an administrative office in Halfmoon.
