SPARTANBURG, SC (02/17/2011)(readMedia)-- Harry Morris, a senior at Salisbury School, has been awarded an Old Main Scholarship and a Bell Ringer Scholarship at Wofford College.
Morris is a member of the class of 2015 and the son of Robert and Kathy Morris, of West Hartford, Conn., 06117
Old Main, the center of Wofford College's campus, is a lasting symbol of the values Wofford seeks to instill in its students: service to others, academic excellence and leadership. Recipients of this scholarship are recognized for these qualities.
Until the 1960s students were specially selected and awarded scholarship money to ring the original bell in Main Building for class changes and special occasions. The ringing of the bell alerted the entire surrounding area that something exciting was happening at Wofford. Today, the Bell Ringer Scholarship is awarded with responsibilities for figuratively "ringing the bell" for Wofford. Responsibilities may include giving tours, hosting overnight visitors, walking visitors to class or lunch, assisting with visitation events, contacting prospective students and guidance counselors, or any other similar activities.
Ninety percent of Wofford's enrolled students receive approximately $32 million in scholarships, grants and loans each year. Each of the endowed scholarship funds requires that recipients demonstrate outstanding character, academic achievement, and potential for contribution to society; some have additional requirements for eligibility.
