ALBANY, NY (08/17/2010)(readMedia)-- Horizons, GHS and Visions Federal Credit Unions recently received community and philosophy awards from the Credit Union Association of New York.
Receiving Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Awards were Horizons, GHS and Visions Federal Credit Unions. This award honors credit unions for their involvement in community activities or projects.
GHS Federal Credit Union was recognized for their "Holiday Celebration with Santa," which provided free entertainment to local area children during the holiday season, a time when many families were facing repercussions from the economic recession. GHS won their first place award in the $100-$200 million asset category.
Horizons Federal Credit Union was cited for providing food, winter coats, boots and accessories to children in need at the Horace Mann Elementary School. Horizons won their first place award in the $50-$100 million asset category.
Visions Federal Credit Union was honored with a second place award in the over $500 million asset category for their Seniors Expo. Throughout the expo, seniors visited numerous exhibitor booths for information valuable to their generation and participated in seminars on pertinent topics.
The award is named after Dora Maxwell, a credit union pioneer, who worked with several organizations to improve the living standards of the poor and needy.
GHS and Visions Federal Credit Unions also received first place Louise Herring Awards for Philosophy in Action in their $50-$250 and over $250 million asset categories, respectively. The award honors credit unions for their practical application of the "people helping people" philosophy that is the hallmark of the credit union movement.
GHS was recognized for their free Shred Day, which provided the community a means of properly disposing of confidential papers to avoid any threats of identity theft.
Visions received their award for creating a new website, www.VISIONSfcuROCKS.org, which provides products and services designed to help Gen Y'ers save time and money.
The competition is named after Louise McCarren Herring, a credit union pioneer, who believed that the operational application of credit union philosophy helped better people's lives.
All first place winning entries will advance to a national competition, where it will compete against other projects from credit unions in the same asset category nationwide.
