DES MOINES, IA (08/26/2014)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) awarded the 2014 H.O. Maxey Community Spirit Award for outstanding community service activities to Humboldt Education Association (HEA). HEA President Susan Tomlinson accepted the award on behalf of the Local Association at the ISEA Summer Leadership Conference in August.
HEA members volunteer for their community's Meals on Wheels program during snow days when the Meals on Wheels program typically closes leaving home-bound seniors with no meals. HEA members step in to offer their services and deliver meals during these days. They also helped raise money for the community's Special Olympic uniforms by working extra shifts at the school concession stands and have participated in numerous canned food drives and other activities throughout the year.
The H.O. Maxey Community Spirit Award is given to Local Associations who demonstrate outstanding community service. H.O. Maxey was an educator and long-time leader in the ISEA who believed the Association should give back to the communities in which they serve.
"We are committed to the community in which we live and work, said HEA President, Susan Tomlinson. We know our students lives continue when they leave our buildings so it's important for us to continue to foster good work in our community."
"We are very proud of our members, and in particular the work that HEA has accomplished. We know that all of our members are deeply committed to the success of their students and the communities in which they live, said Tammy Wawro, ISEA President. Educators understand that learning is not confined to our buildings. It is a community effort. Local Associations all over the state do great work in their communities, and our H.O. Maxey Award is a wonderful way for us to highlight their efforts," added Wawro.
