ALBANY, NY (02/07/2008)(readMedia)-- Emily Griffen, a junior at The Albany Academies, will be recognized at The Salvation Army’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner tonight with its “Youth Making A Difference Award” for her dedicated efforts to better the community.

The Volunteer Appreciation Dinner will be held from 6-8 p.m. tonight at The Salvation Army offices located at 20 South Ferry Street in Albany.

Emily spearheaded a community service project that filled more than 400 stockings for needy families this past holiday season. She was also trained through the New York Wired for Education online course so that she could serve as a tutor for other children to help empower them and move them closer to their dreams.

“We applaud Emily’s dedication to improving the lives of others and salute her for this impressive achievement,” said Dr. Richard Barter, Head of School for The Albany Academies. “She demonstrates tremendous leadership qualities both at our school and in the community-at-large, and proudly displays the values that are instilled in all of our students.”

“Emily embodies the spirit and mission of The Salvation Army – giving of oneself to help those in need,” said Felix Perez, Director of Development & Planned Giving for The Salvation Army’s Albany Area Services. “We are so pleased to have the opportunity to work with students such as Emily, as she is truly ‘making a difference’ in the lives of others; we are proud to recognize her with this honor.”

The Albany Academies is home to the two campuses of The Albany Academy (West Campus) and Albany Academy for Girls (East Campus), which share a nearly 200-year-old tradition of quality, single-gender independent school education. Both campuses bring with them deeply treasured values of community, tradition, and purpose to the newly formed school known as The Albany Academies.

The Albany Academies is committed to developing the potential of the whole individual by building a community that fosters scholarship, leadership, character, service and creativity.
