LOCAL ACTIVISTS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL JOHN LEWIS VOTING RIGHTS ADVANCEMENT ACTION DAY "VOTERCADE"

Local Groups Host Massive 150+ Cities Mobilization Via Votercades To Defeat Voter Suppression Efforts and Promote Democratic Reforms

NEW YORK, NY (05/07/2021) (readMedia)-- On Saturday, May 8, 2021 New York City 2 PM ET) - our community leaders will hold a local John Lewis Good Trouble Votercade, joining the 130+ "John Lewis 'Good Trouble' Awareness" Votercades across America to fight voter suppression; address the filibuster; and support DC Statehood. Specifically, the national effort will encourage community members to get into 'good trouble' by making calls to federal lawmakers to encourage them to advance democracy across the country by supporting the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (HR 4), the For The People Act (HR1/S1), the Washington, D.C. Admissions Act (HR 51), and addressing the filibuster.

Following the record-breaking Black, Brown, and Youth voter turnout in the Georgia Runoff election, at least 361 new laws have been proposed in 47 states to restrict voter access to the ballot box. Some examples of restricted voter access include reduced time frames for voting by mail; reducing early in-person voting dates; ending, reducing or restricting access to drop boxes; more restrictive identification requirements to vote; denying the distribution of food or water to voters waiting in excessively long lines on Election Day to vote; and many other efforts to frustrate access to voting.

The sole purpose of implementing these voter suppression tactics is to attack and decrease the votes of millions of Black, Brown, Indigenous and People of Color. Meanwhile, Billionaires and Big Businesses continue to spend record-breaking amounts of money to influence our elections.

of voters. It is designed to raise the community’s awareness of the urgent need to protect voting rights and our democracy. An attack on the voting rights of any one state has a direct and consequential effect on the voting rights of every other state.
