NEWPORT NEWS, VA (11/05/2010)(readMedia)-- Newport News-based Langley Federal Credit Union has won Honorable Mention in the state Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program for credit unions. The Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association, honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities.
The credit union's award-winning project was its lead sponsorship of the Women Build Habitat for Humanity House in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and local Fox affiliate - FOX43-TV.
Langley Federal Credit Union was the lead sponsor of the Habitat build and also supplied volunteers to help construct the home. The credit union and FOX43-TV also produced television spots that highlighted the work of the local Habitat for Humanity chapter and provided an overview of the benefits of homeownership.
"Langley Federal Credit Union believes in the good work of Habitat and its mission to make safe, quality homes a reality for qualified modest-income families," said LFCU President/CEO Jean Yokum. "We know that even in the current economy, homeownership remains the best path to building wealth for families, so we were honored to help make this build possible."
Through the efforts of Langley Federal Credit Union, Habitat for Humanity and FOX43-TV, the home was completed and occupied in July 2010.
