SAVANNAH, GA (01/16/2014)(readMedia)-- Fashion marketing and management student and Lawrenceville native Sania Tharani was one of nine Savannah College of Art and Design students selected as an YMA Fashion Scholar for 2014.
Tharani had an interest in the arts from an early age, first with stage performance and theatre, then later with fashion. After doing extensive research on colleges, she found SCAD to be one of the top creative universities in the nation and was impressed by the professors' real industry experience. Tharani chose fashion marketing and management as a major to give her the perfect blend of creativity and business knowledge to advance her career.
"This opportunity means a lot to me because it gives me the chance to make connections and possibly gain experience in the fashion industry in New York City, where I eventually want to live and base a successful career," said Tharani. "I've always had a keen interest in menswear, and YMA FSF case study allowed me to really delve into the field and create a full menswear brand. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to exert the knowledge and creative insight I've gained at SCAD."
The rigorous application process for the scholarship begins in the fall and ends in December, when approximately 100 students are selected by some of the top names in fashion to receive a $5,000 scholarship and fashion mentorship. In years past, each YMA scholar has also been placed in internships with such renowned organizations as Neiman Marcus, Kenneth Cole, Polo Ralph Lauren and Saks Fifth Avenue.
All nine SCAD students were honored Jan. 8, at the YMA Scholarship Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. This is the seventh consecutive year that SCAD students have been named YMA scholars.
