EMC Game Developers to Present U.N.'s 'Breakaway' Project to Hope Summit

BURLINGTON, VT (09/07/2010)(readMedia)-- A team of Champlain College students and Prof. Ann DeMarle have been invited to attend and speak at the Images & Voices of Hope World Summit "Inspiring Media in an Open Source World," Sept. 23-26 in Haines Falls, NY.

Images & Voices of Hope is a global dialogue dedicated to strengthening the role of media as agents of world benefit. Its mission is to expand awareness of the choices those in media make that raise public trust, generate constructive meaning, and amplify human hope, enhancing humanity's capacity for life-promoting action. The Champlain team, students Steven Beaulieu, Maureen Bonsignore, Norman Connor, Heather Conover, Jovan Ellis, and Deanna Vaida, along with Project Manager Lauren Nishikawa, are all part of the larger Emergent Media Center team creating "Breakaway." The online game designed in collaboration with Population Media Center is sponsored by the United Nations to address the UN Millennium goals to end poverty. The game has been designed to provide alternatives for youth to violent behavior against women. It is available online at http://www.breakawaygame.com

Liaison International, a provider of software for the health care industry and higher education in Watertown, Mass., is sponsoring the EMC student team. Liaison President and CEO George Haddad explained, "We at Liaison have been a proponent of diversity and social awareness through our practices. We are pleased to support a model project that combines technology with such an important social issue as Violence against Women."

We are looking forward to sharing and learning from the other "media makers" assembled. Likewise we hope they can add to the conversation about the global "Breakaway" project we are working on," said DeMarle, who is director of the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College.
