Local Student Ashley Stingel of Pottstown Earns Academic Recognition at Skidmore College

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (07/01/2010)(readMedia)-- Ashley Stingel, a member of the Class of 2010 at Skidmore College, earned academic recognition at the college this spring.

She is the daughter of Earl and Susan Stingel of Pottstown.

Stingel earned a B.A. degree magna cum laude with honor in chemistry at Skidmore's 99th commencement in May. In addition, she was one of two students who received the Charlotte W. Fahey Prize, established in honor of a former professor and presented annually to two outstanding chemistry seniors.

During her Skidmore career, Stingel was a member of Periclean, Skidmore's own academic honor society, which was formed in 1956 to stimulate intellectual curiosity, encourage creative activity, and honor academic achievement. She also was a member of Skidmore's Honors Forum, which strengthens the intellectual life at the college and provides positive leadership on campus and in the community. Membership is open to students based on their academic accomplishments and commitment to excellence.

Also while a student, Stingel was a Porter Scholar. Named in honor of former Skidmore President David H. Porter, the designation carries with it a scholarship for students in the science and mathematics fields, awarded on the basis of superior accomplishment and exceptional promise, without regard to financial need. Recipients are not required to major in either a scientific or mathematical discipline, but are expected to demonstrate serious research and to actively participate in academic and cocurricular activities in these fields.

Founded in 1903, Skidmore College is a coeducational, liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 2,400 students. The college grants the bachelor's degree in some 60 majors, including both traditional liberal arts disciplines and preprofessional programs. Skidmore also awards the master of arts in liberal studies degree.
