Local Student David Solomon of Brookline Earns Academic Recognition at Skidmore College

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (07/02/2013)(readMedia)-- David Solomon, a member of the Class of 2013 at Skidmore College, earned academic recognition and cemented his post-college plans this spring.

He is the son of Sam Solomon of Brookline and Jamie Jaffee of Lincoln.

An alternate for a Fulbright award, Solomon will travel to China to study under the auspices of a U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship. Bound for Suzhou University, he will study intensive Mandarin as one of approximately 610 U.S. undergraduate and graduate students receiving a scholarship this year from the U.S. Department of State. CLS participants will spend seven to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes this summer in one of 13 countries to study Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Indonesian, Japanese, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu.

Solomon earned a B.A. degree magna cum laude with honor in international affairs and in government at Skidmore's 102nd commencement in May. In addition, he received two academic prizes: the Jerome Solomon Ginsberg Memorial Award in International Affairs, awarded to a Skidmore junior or senior major in international affairs who demonstrates excellence in the study of the discipline; and the Henry T. Moore Prize in Government, established in honor of a former president of the college and awarded to a government major who has excelled in the study of international relations.

During his Skidmore career Solomon was elected to the Skidmore Periclean Honors Forum, which recognizes academic achievement and promotes intellectual and creative activity as well as citizenship and civic engagement. He also was elected to Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society.

Founded in 1903, Skidmore College is a coeducational, liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 2,400 students. The college grants the bachelor's degree in some 60 majors, including both traditional liberal arts disciplines and preprofessional programs. Skidmore also awards the master of arts in liberal studies degree.
