DES MOINES, IA (08/09/2017) (readMedia)-- Kim Jordon of Jordan's Nursery in Cedar Falls was awarded the Iowa State Education Association 2017 Friend of Education Award at a special awards celebration and banquet held on Monday, July 31, at the Prairie Meadows Convention Center in Altoona.
The Friend of Education award honors citizens who give their time and energy, but pays special tribute to one individual or group who has made a significant contribution to education. The award recognizes that education is a total community effort and that schools and communities must work together for the best outcome for our students.
Nominated by Cedar Falls educators and the Holmes Junior High Tree Committee, Kim shares her expertise and love of nature with Holmes middle school students by helping plant new trees and maintaining the current trees on campus. Her advice including visiting the school, working with the nature club and taking care of the trees is invaluable. Sharing her love of nature and her expertise in arboriculture is invaluable as the campus tree population has grown exponentially under her care and guidance. Students learn about science, nature and the beauty of plants and have a vested interest in the success of the program.
"How fortunate Holmes Junior High is to have Kim, and how wonderful it would be if every community had a Kim to invest their time and energy in our local schools," said Tammy Wawro, President of the ISEA. "Kim's dedication and determination to build a better environment for students, the school and the community is an inspiration to all of us. We are proud of her efforts and proud to honor her with the Friend of Education Award," Wawro added.
