DES MOINES, IA (08/01/2011)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present Louise Unkrich of Swedesburg as an Iowan of the Day for the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Hard work started for Unkrich during World War II as she was a true 'Rosie the Riveter.' Since then, Unkrich has been volunteering her time as a member of the T.T.T. Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, her local PTA and her church for over 60 years. However, in her community, she is known for something much bigger.

Unkrich has brought her Swedish heritage to Swedesburg, Iowa. Unkrich founded the Swedish Heritage Society and Swedish Museum 25 years ago and is still the director. Because of her hard work, over 100,000 local, national and international tourists have visited the museum. In addition, Unkrich chaired the famous Swedesburg Smorgasbord for 28 years and raised thousands of dollars for Iowa charities and world relief.

"Louise is a role model of community service, work ethic and character. She is loved by many," said Jess Settles, her nominator. Unkrich is well deserving of the Iowan of the Day award because her endless years of service and leadership have helped make Iowa a unique place to live.

Unkrich's day of recognition will be Thursday, August 11 at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Along with a one night's stay at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott, Unkrich will receive a cash prize, grandstand tickets and use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart. Unkrich will also receive a special introduction at 2:30 p.m. August 11 on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage.

Founded in 1997, the Iowan of the Day program allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to recognize Iowa's shining stars. The program continues to honor individuals from across the state each year who have made a difference in others' lives while upholding characteristics associated with Iowa-dependability, integrity, hard work and sense of community.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since its inception in 1993, the Foundation has generated over $80 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
