SAVANNAH, GA (03/22/2013)(readMedia)-- Lufkin, Texas native, Lufkin High School graduate, and SCAD Atlanta graphic design student Michael Bergman won top honor for the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon poster design contest, earning him a $1,500 scholarship and the honor of having his winning design featured as the official marathon poster.

Bergman drew his ideas for the poster from his family life. His marathon runner wife served as an artistic inspiration for the design. "She gives me insight into the minds of runners," Bergman said. "It helps me understand the mental battle all runners face."

The design competition was held on Sept. 28, 2012 for all students currently enrolled in the SCAD's graphic design program. Publix challenged students to create a unique piece of Georgia artwork incorporating the themes passion, health, and running within a time limit of 13 hours and 1 minute (to coincide with the distance of the half marathon).

The first and second place winners of the competition were unveiled on March 12th at SCAD Atlanta. The winning design was featured prominently at the Publix Georgia Marathon starting line where nearly 2,000 runners gathered to begin the run through metro Atlanta's most interesting landmarks and historic areas, including King Historic Site, the Carter Center, and Piedmont Park.
