Mike Quinlan Named Iowan of the Day

DES MOINES, IA (07/29/2015)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present Mike Quinlan of Iowa City as an Iowan of the Day for the 2015 Iowa State Fair.

Mike Quinlan knows community service; both his career and volunteer work have been dedicated to it. Before retiring, he worked as a parole officer for the Department of Correctional Services for more than 25 years and as a work crew leader for Americorps. Beyond his work, Quinlan helped his community reap further benefits by leading a program called "Each One Reach One". Here he supervised probationers and parolees on service projects in order to help them reintegrate into society.

He is known as a leader in his community, having served as West Branch Mayor and establishing himself as the voice of West Branch Football by announcing for the past 20 years. These activities earned him the affectionate title "Mr. West Branch" Quinlan also worked as president of West Branch Lion's Club. He is also part of the Arc of South East Iowa Hall of Fame. The organization works with families who have members with disabilities.

"Mike's tireless volunteerism, support of his community and service to others embodies what it means to be a good Iowan," said Bob Dvorsky, Iowa Senator and Mike's nominator, "He's very deserving of this award."

Quinlan's day of recognition will be Wednesday, August 19 at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. He will be recognized with a ceremony on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage at 2:30 p.m. Along with accommodations at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott, he will receive a cash prize, Grandstand tickets and use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart.

Founded in 1997, the Iowan of the Day program allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to recognize Iowa's most outstanding individuals. The program continues to honor Iowan's across the state who have made a difference in others' lives, while upholding the characteristics associated with Iowa-dependability, integrity, hard work and sense of community.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since its inception in 1993, the Foundation has generated more than $110 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
