Minnesota State Fair Announces a Call for Submissions for 2011 Commemorative Art

ST. PAUL, MINN. (08/19/2010)(readMedia)-- For the first time ever, the Minnesota State Fair is asking local artists to apply to create the official commemorative art of the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Artists are encouraged to attend this year's State Fair, Aug. 26 through Labor Day, Sept. 6, for inspiration. The final piece will be the chosen artist's visual interpretation of this annual event and will be unveiled to coincide with the 2011 State Fair.

The Minnesota State Fair 2011 Commemorative Art will be the eighth in a series of annual artwork created exclusively for the State Fair. This is the first year the State Fair is putting out a call for submissions. In past years, Minnesota artists were selected by a staff committee and have included: Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher (2004), Mary GrandPré (2005), Nancy Carlson (2006), Michael Birawer (2007), Edie Abnet (2008), Leo Stans (2009) and Deborah Voyda Rogers (2010). A gallery of past artwork is available at www.mnstatefair.org/art.

This call for submissions is open to Minnesota residents only, age 18 and older, and working primarily in two-dimensional media. There is no entry fee and the deadline for applications is Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 by 3:30 p.m.

After applications have been received there will be two stages to the selection process. First, a panel of judges will review the applications and select five finalists. The five finalists will receive a stipend of $300 each to create sketches or near-complete artwork of their visual interpretation of the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Then, a panel of judges from the local art community will select one official artist from the five finalists to finish his/her artwork. The final piece will be unveiled at the state fairgrounds in the spring of 2011. The official artist will receive a commission of $3,500.

Once the artist is selected and the piece is complete, the commemorative poster, a limited number of signed giclee prints and other merchandise featuring the art will be available for purchase beginning in summer 2011. Proceeds will support the Minnesota State Fair Foundation 501(c)(3) mission to preserve and improve State Fair buildings, grounds and educational experiences. The original art will be on display in the Fine Arts Center during the 12-day run of the 2011 State Fair.
