ALBANY, NY (11/14/2007)(readMedia)-- John McCain, (Republican) Presidential candidate should be ashamed of himself for his unresponsiveness to the inappropriate statement by his supporter when she asked, “How can we beat the bitch?” The supporter was speaking of Hillary Clinton, front-runner for the Presidential election of 2008. This is 2007! The fact that a McCain supporter uttered those words is bad enough. What is worse is that McCain did not take an immediate step to rectify the situation. He joyfully welcomed those words.
An individual, who does not grasp the need to react negatively to this stereotyping of women, has no business running for President of the United States. McCain responded with a half hearted attempt by saying he “respected” Hillary, but if he really respected her and all women, he would have nipped the comment in the bud by distancing himself from such a derogatory and disparaging remark.
Further, the silence by other candidates is deafening. Each and every presidential candidate should be speaking up and speaking out about the inappropriate comment by McCain’s supporter and his obvious indifference.
This incident should be a wake-up call for all women voters, no matter what political party they are affiliated with. It is obvious that McCain and other Republican candidates lack the sensitivity that it takes to be President of the United States. Their inability to reprimand even their ardent supporters for making improper remarks shows their true character when it comes to women’s issues.
