NYC Must Tie Council Pay Increase to Eliminating Lulus

NEW YORK, NY (01/14/2016)(readMedia)-- Today the Mayor sent a letter to the Speaker of the New York City Council approving a salary increase in exchange for eliminating outside income. The letter did not appear to comply with the Quadrennial Advisory Commission's additional recommendation to increase salaries as a condition of eliminating lulus.

In response, Common Cause/NY Executive Director, Susan Lerner, made the following statement:

"Common Cause/NY supports an increase in pay for members of the New York City Council, but only if they agree to forego outside income and eliminate lulus. It can't be one or the other. Lulus are a wasteful and inefficient backdoor way to boost pay, which has spawned a cottage industry of unnecessary committees so that nearly everyone in the 51-member body is eligible for some kind of cash bonus. The Commission has done an outstanding analysis, and the City should adopt their recommendation in full."
