ALBANY, NY (10/01/2007)(readMedia)-- The New York State Dental Association has chosen Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, Dean Emeritus for University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, to receive the Jarvie-Burkhart Award, the organization’s highest honor. Dr. Dugoni will accept the award during the New York State Dental Foundation awards luncheon Friday, October 12 at the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan.

One of the most respected figures in the dental profession, Dr. Dugoni is currently president of the American Dental Association Foundation and has served as president of the American Dental Association (ADA), the American Association of Dental Schools, the American Board of Orthodontics and the California Dental Association. He is the recipient of dozens of national and international awards for his contributions to dentistry, including Alumnus of the Year recognition by four universities. Additionally, Dr. Dugoni is the first and only person in the United States or Canada to have a dental school named in his honor while holding the position of dean. Although he concluded his deanship at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2006, he continues to be involved with the school and the university as dean emeritus, professor of orthodontics and senior executive for development.

Dr. Dugoni has been a visionary for dental education. He is honorary chair of Dental Education: Our Legacy-Our Future, an ADA and ADA Foundation effort to raise awareness of the challenges facing dental education in the U.S. and to promote a culture of philanthropy within dentistry to address these issues. He has lectured extensively throughout his career, presenting more than 1,000 lectures, papers, clinics and essays and is the author of more than 160 published articles.

During his tenure as dean of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, Dr. Dugoni refined the humanistic model of education. By fostering a network of open and honest communication, the entire university community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and patients— takes responsibility for the welfare of the institution.

Dr. Dugoni is a fellow of the American College of Dentists; International College of Dentists; Academy of Dentistry International; American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; National Academies of Practice; Pierre Fauchard Academy; Academy of General Dentistry, and American Academy of Oral Medicine.

The Jarvie-Burkhart Award, established in 1905, is named after former New York State Dental Association leaders and dental pioneers, Drs. William Jarvie and Harvey Burkhart.

The New York State Dental Association is a constituent of the American Dental Association and represents more than 13,000 dentists practicing in New York State. -30-
