"Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of women in America, but alarmingly few women see lung cancer as a threat to them," said Gail Bost, Senior Director of Development and Special Projects for the American Lung Association in Tennessee, Nashville "What few people know is that lung cancer surpassed breast cancer in 1987 as the #1 cause of cancer killer of women."
The money raised stays in Tennessee and supports research for diseases like lung cancer, COPD, and Asthma. It will also fund online lung cancer support, Better Breathers Groups (support groups for those with COPD and other lung diseases) and educational programs for children like Open Airways and Asthma 1-2-3 for school personnel.
Asthma 1-2-3 is a program designed to teach educators basic asthma knowledge to improve the lives of children in schools. Open Airways for Schools (OAS) is a fun and interactive program designed to educate children ages 8-11 in how to mange their asthma.
Currently there are 12,003 pediatric asthma patients and 35,376 adult asthma patients in the Nashville area, according to the State of the Air 2015 report.
