NOW NYS is proud to announce that the National NOW PAC has endorsed Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and recommends her to Governor Paterson for appointment to Senator Hillary Clinton's US Senate seat. Ms. Maloney not only believes in women's equality, but has actually worked a lifetime to achieve such equality.
In the words of NOW NYS President Marcia Pappas: "Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has always been in the trenches working for women's equality. She is a leader and will fight for what is right. Filling the shoes of Hillary Clinton will be a challenge, but we feel confident that Ms. Maloney is the right person for the job."
In Congress Maloney serves as the Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee Chair, and Vice Chair of the Joint Economic Committee. She is also former Co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues, from which post she passed numerous bills to improve the lives of women and families. Also, most impressively, Maloney's work on anti-rape legislation was immortalized in a Lifetime Television movie, A Life Interrupted, wherein one of the central characters is Congresswoman Maloney herself.
Maloney's achievements include successful legislation to end trafficking of women, to improve women's health and reproductive rights, and to expand affordable child care. She is also responsible for legislation creating a human rights commission in Afghanistan and providing funding for programs to combat the Taliban's oppression of women. A prime sponsor of the Equal Rights Amendment since 1997, and an ardent advocate of equal pay for equal work, Maloney has documented the persistence of the wage gap between men and women, joining Representative John Dingell in authoring two reports: "A New Look Through the Glass Ceiling: Where are the Women" (October 2001) and "Is the Glass Ceiling a Permanent Fixture?" (November 2003).
So it is with great pride that NOW New York State presents the National NOW PAC endorsement and recommends the appointment of Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney to the US Senate seat being vacated by our wonderful new Secretary of State, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY).
