ALBANY, NY (09/26/2007)(readMedia)-- On Thursday, September 27, at 8:00 pm, several leaders of the National Organization for Women will be in attendance at the Minetta Lane Theatre, 18 Minetta Lane, to screen the off-Broadway musical, Walmartopia.
The Minetta Lane Theatre will be the location of a political satire where a single mom, employed by Wal-Mart, speaks out against the company’s working conditions. She then finds herself in the future, where she discovers that Wal-Mart dominates the world.
The political statement that Walmartopia makes is appropriate and shines light on how Wal-Mart engages in discrimination, and denies good working conditions, including denial of benefits and wages for working families in this country.
As part of our "Women Friendly Workplace Campaign" NOW was the first women's rights organization to publicize the complaints and accusations of discrimination in pay and promotions for women at Wal-Mart stores. In 2002, the National Organization for Women named Wal-Mart a “Merchant of Shame".
A talk back will be held after the show with National NOW Executive Vice President, Olga Vives and Martha Burk, from the Corporate Accountability Project.
