The State Board of Elections was deeply saddened today upon learning that former State Board Co-Chair, Commissioner Neil W. Kelleher passed away early this morning. In honor of his many years of distinguished service, the Board will observe a moment of silence to start off its meeting tomorrow, Friday, September 5th. The meeting is scheduled to commence at 12:00 Noon.
Neil Kelleher was appointed by Governor Pataki as Commissioner of the NYS Board of Elections effective December 1, 1998. He served in this capacity and also served as Vice-Chair and most recently as Co-Chair of the Board until his retirement in February of this year. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Kelleher had been the Chairman of the City of Troy Housing Authority. Mr. Kelleher's many years of public service began in 1960 when he was elected to two terms as Mayor of the City of Troy, Rensselaer County, and continued as a New York State Assemblyman for 26 years until his retirement from that post in 1992.
The thoughts and prayers of the State Board Commissioners and staff are extended to Commissioner Kelleher's family and friends.
