Northwest holds inaugural career- technical honor society induction

Northwest Mississippi Community College held an inaugural induction ceremony for the college's newly-formed National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) on Tuesday, March 19 at the Fine Arts Auditorium in Senatobia.

The society is open to Career-Technical Education (CTE) students who maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 both cumulatively and in their CTE classes. At Northwest, 111 students were inducted into the NTHS. Students inducted represented all campuses at Northwest: Senatobia, DeSoto, Oxford, Olive Branch, Ashland and online.

The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Michael Heindl, president of Northwest who praised the students for their hard work and dedication. Several students took part in a candle ceremony representing the light of knowledge and the seven NTHS attributes that members should embody: skill, honesty, service, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship and leadership.

The students were invited to come forward to sign the membership roll and then received their pins. After the pinning, the ceremony was completed with the reciting of the NTHS pledge.

Dr. Tonyalle Rush, Career Center director, is the primary adviser for NTHS. She was instrumental in establishing the college's chapter. Northwest Chapter #4485 of the National Technical Honor Society was officially chartered on Nov. 29, 2018. Dr. Rush decided to initiate the process of chartering NTHS as a retention initiative to increase student engagement in students enrolled in Career and Technical programs.

"Student engagement and retention is a top priority in my role at the college. I am honored to serve our students at Northwest. The induction ceremony was beautiful, and I'm extremely proud of our students," Rush said.

According to the NTHS website, membership benefits also include a certificate, member ID card, diploma seal, window decal and graduation tassel. Students also have access to recommendation letters and eligibility to apply for scholarships to further their education.

The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members and nearly a million members since its inception in 1984. Awarding over $2 million in scholarships to date, NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today's highly competitive, skilled workforce. For over 30 years, NTHS has been the acknowledged leader in the recognition of outstanding student achievement in career and technical education.
