Dr. Kevin Lowery recognized for scholarly excellence at Olivet's 2012 Commencement

BOURBONNAIS, IL (05/11/2012)(readMedia)-- Faculty members Dr. Kevin Twain Lowery, a former Cumberland area resident, and Dr. Catherine Anstrom were honored at Olivet Nazarene University's 99th Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 5, 2012.

A theology and philosophy professor at Olivet, Dr. Lowery received the 2012 Samuel L. Mayhugh Award for Scholarly Excellence.

Lowery is the son of Twain and Judy Lowery, Corriganville. He is a 1983 graduate of Mt. Savage High School and a 1987 graduate of Frostburg State University, where he double majored in physics and mathematics.

For several years, he was employed as an engineer at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory. After entering ordained ministry, Lowery later returned to the area to pastor First Wesleyan Church in Cresaptown. In 2004, he joined Olivet's School of Theology and Christian Ministry, and now teaches classes in ethics, philosophy and theology.

Lowery received his doctorate in 2004 from the University of Notre Dame and has served in pastoral ministry for 10 years. A renaissance man, he is a member of Mensa; tutors music students in piano, percussion, trumpet; is a member of math, physics, and religion honors societies; has read about 400 books over the past eight years; has published three books while at Olivet; and has coached Little League.

"Dr. Lowery's gifts in the classroom have been clearly validated by faculty colleagues and students," said Dr. John C. Bowling, University president. "His enthusiasm and energy as a scholar are evident to us all, as is his deep commitment to shape students in a Christian worldview."
