PA Williams & Common Cause/NY: "RCV is Not to Blame for BOE Error"
NEW YORK, NY (06/30/2021) (readMedia)-- Today, Common Cause/NY Executive Director Susan Lerner and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams held a press call to discuss yesterday's events at the NYC Board of Elections, ranked choice voting and next steps.
Senator Zellnor Myrie, who could not make the call, provided the below statement:
"What happened last night has nothing to do with ranked choice voting, but reflects long running problems with how we structure election administration in this state. We've needed to reform the BOE since well before I was a Senator and I am committed to holding hearings ASAP to hear directly from voters and election officials with a focus on making significant changes at the BOE. However, the urgent need for reform can't and shouldn't deter New Yorkers from voting in our elections and having confidence in the eventual final election results. New Yorkers voted overwhelmingly for RCV because it gives them more power at the ballot box, and any attempt to undermine that is an affront to our democracy. We have made so many pro-voter reforms in the State legislature. We're making it fairer and easier to vote in NYC - now it's time for transparency until this counting process is over."
