PEF members embrace community charities during the holidays

ALBANY, NY (12/08/2012)(readMedia)-- Leaders, members and volunteers of the New York State Public Employees Federation (PEF) kept a holiday tradition alive for 22 years today by wrapping toys and preparing gift and food baskets for families and children in the Capital Region.

The toys and food baskets are being donated to the Toys for Tots program, St. Margaret's Children Center, and to families of parolees who are working hard on low-income jobs to turn their lives around and be productive members of society.

"PEF members have generous hearts, especially when it comes to helping those in their communities," said PEF President Susan Kent. "Along with donating money and items to the victims of Hurricane Sandy, our members realize the true meaning of the holiday spirit, especially when it comes to children. Their donations and time in wrapping these gifts has a significant and positive effect on the recipients."

Parole officers from the Albany area, along with PEF members who work throughout the Capital Region, donated the toys and money to buy the food for the gift baskets. Toys were also collected at the union's annual holiday party, in lieu of an admission fee, according to Nikki Brate, PEF's coordinator for the Capital Region area.

"Our union members are incredible individuals," Brate said. "We found out what special needs the children of St, Margaret's wished for, and we were very successful in fulfilling their wish lists," Brate said.

A parole revocation specialist, Susan Jeffords, said parole officers will deliver the gift baskets during home visits to the families of parolees.

"The look of wonder and surprise on their faces is a gift in itself," Jeffords said. "It makes a huge difference when someone is trying to succeed at a new life, and receives support from others."

PEF represents 54,000 professional, scientific and technical employees, including 18,000 members in the Capital Region.
