SAVANNAH, GA (05/23/2013)(readMedia)-- SAVANNAH, Georgia-University School of Jackson graduate and SCAD B.F.A. animation student Grant Whitsitt recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Whitsitt won top honors in the SCAD Spirit category.
The imaginative creation, built by Whitsitt and teammates Amanda Bullen, Paige Cano and Bruce Sampson, features a tiered beehive with a textured hexagonal honeycomb pattern in celebration of Art the Bee, the SCAD mascot.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to compete," Whitsitt said. "I come from a very supportive family, where my pursuit of the arts was always encouraged. My parents have sacrificed very much for me to be able to attend SCAD. I would say that they are the reason I am able to pursue my passions."
The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for $5,000 in prizes.
Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
