Paul Venner Named Iowan of the Day

DES MOINES, IA (07/29/2013)(readMedia)-- The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present Paul Venner of Breda as an Iowan of the Day for the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Venner strives to make a difference. He spends his time volunteering at Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Carroll and New Hope Village, being a member of the American Legion Post and mastering his own garden to donate his home grown produce to those in need. Venner is also an active member of St Anthony Hospice.

"When Paul retired from farming, he did not just sit back and relax," said Trish Roberts of the St. Anthony Foundation. "Paul became even more involved in projects that impact people and brighten lives."

New Hope, a non-profit organization that provides residential and vocational services to the needy, has especially valued Venner's contributions. Twice a month, he assists with the loading and hauling of recyclables and helps maintain the upkeep of the organization's grounds. Jodie Jansen, Director of Development for New Hope, says he does it all with "dedication and a smile."

He is never afraid to stop by the home of a shut-in just to turn around their day. Venner and his wife Rita Ann often coordinate birthday celebrations for Breda natives who may not have family around to do so. It is because of genuine acts like these that Venner has been chosen as an Iowan of the Day.

Venner's day of recognition will be Thursday, August 15 at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Along with a one night's stay at the Downtown Des Moines Marriott, he will receive a cash prize, grandstand tickets and use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart. Venner will also receive a special introduction on August 15 at 2:30 p.m. on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage.

Founded in 1997, the Iowan of the Day program allows the Blue Ribbon Foundation to recognize Iowa's most outstanding individuals. The program continues to honor Iowan's across the state who have made a difference in others' lives, while upholding the characteristics associated with Iowa-dependability, integrity, hard work and sense of community.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Since its inception in 1993, the Foundation has generated over $95 million for renovations and improvements to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
