Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York Denounces Potential Senate Candidacy of Harold Ford Jr.

President & CEO M. Tracey Brooks: 'He Does Not Stand a Chance in This Pro-Choice State.'

ALBANY, NY (01/07/2010)(readMedia)-- Talk of a potential Democratic primary this year involving Harold Ford Jr. for the U.S. Senate seat held by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand drew fire today from Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York (PPANY) President and CEO M. Tracey Brooks.

"As we all know, New York is a progressive, pro-choice state. Polls and elections around the state have proven this time and time again," said Brooks. "This state has a long tradition of a political climate that does not support anti-choice candidates, so Harold Ford should not even consider running in this state."

Throughout the health care reform debate and other crucial issues, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has fought in the best interests of the women and families of New York. In contrast, Ford's record as a Congressman from Tennessee does not reflect the values and needs of New York voters.

During his unsuccessful run for U.S. Senate in 2006, Ford's public statements affirmed that he is unabashedly anti-choice. He is on the record against women and families having the ability to make the reproductive health care decisions that are best for them.

"If Ford enters into a Democratic primary, he would just be wasting his time and money," Brooks said emphatically.
