Poll to Be Released Monday Finds New Yorkers Overwhelmingly Support Public Financing of Elections

NEW YORK, NY (04/24/2008)(readMedia)-- On Monday, Citizen Action of New York will hold a press conference with Clean Elections supporters; New York City Assembly Members, State Senators and others to make public the results of a Zogby poll which shows the overwhelming support among New Yorkers for full public funding of campaigns for New York State.

The poll was conducted with a sampling of New Yorkers throughout the State and convincingly indicates that upstate, downstate, city and suburban New Yorkers agree that even in hard economic times full public funding of elections would increase voter confidence and will save taxpayers money.

The New York State Assembly is expected to take up a public financing proposal before the close of the legislative session in June. Governor David A. Paterson is a long time champion of the Clean Elections public financing proposal tested in the poll. Paterson was the prime sponsor of the Clean Elections bill beginning in 1999 until he left the State Senate to become Lieutenant Governor. Senator Malcolm Smith, the Democratic Senate Minority Leader, is now the prime sponsor of the proposal in the State Senate.
