SCHENECTADY, NY (01/24/2008)(readMedia)-- Price Chopper is offering, for a limited time, a “return” your outdated meds program in sixty-six Price Chopper stores with pharmacies. The pharmacies began accepting outdated prescriptions and over-the-counter meds Sunday, January 13th . The program will run through Saturday, February 2, 2008.
"This is an opportunity for consumers with unwanted meds to protect their family, protect the community and protect the environment," stated Vincent Mainella, VP of Pharmacy.
Customers should bring back the medications in their original container, but remove any personal information from the label. The container can be placed in a box or envelope and brought to a Price Chopper pharmacy where pharmacists will secure them and dispose of them properly. Price Chopper cannot accept controlled substances (narcotics), needles and syringes, medical devices and equipment, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and acids or household hazardous waste.
Each year pharmaceuticals enter the environment through sewage. This program is a service to consumers but also gives them the opportunity to help lessen the effects that these medications have on water supplies and the environment. “We are excited about providing consumers with a safe and environmentally-friendly way of disposing of their unneeded and outdated prescription drugs and to continue our efforts to protect our environment," said Barbara Page, Community and Public Relations Manager.
"Price Chopper may expand availability of this program beyond February 2, 2008 if it is met with success," said Mainella
