Proclamations are Issued Honoring Girl Scouts' Centennial

ALBANY, NY (03/12/2012)(readMedia)-- The Legislative Women's Caucus, in conjunction with the NYS Assembly, and the mayors' offices of the cities of Albany and Schenectady, have issued a resolution and proclamations, respectively, to the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) honoring the 100th birthday of Girl Scouts.

On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid.

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has branded its centennial year as The Year of the Girl and is using the centennial as a platform to launch the boldest cause campaign dedicated to girls' leadership issues in the nation's history. All members of society are being asked to help girls achieve their full leadership potential. This will be a monumental shift in the way Girl Scouts supports girls in this country, and seek to get the issue of girls' leadership on the national agenda. This cause campaign is entitled "ToGetHerThere". ToGetHerThere – will help break down societal barriers that hinder girls from leading and achieving the highest ranks in all fields and industries, from science and technology to business and government.

Locally, the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York and its members will celebrate during Girl Scout week (3/12-3/18) and throughout the year with events such as:

• The Year of the Girl Run hosted at the Sage College campus in Troy on Sunday, April 29, 2012. This event is the culmination of an eleven week program that covers: nutrition, training, fitness, self-image, self-esteem and healthy media images.

Jam Camp a weekend long event (June 1-3) at the Washington county Fairgrounds that is a back to basics Girl Scouting event in honor of Juliette Gordon Low's love for nature and the outdoors.

• 100th Anniversary Party (September 14) at the National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame in Saratoga, NY where alumnae and other guests will enjoy festivities that celebrate the nostalgic elements of Girl Scouting while participating in the fun of Girl Scout programs today.

Additionally, adult and girl members are creating their own community events such as: Juliette Gordon Low birthday parties, donating 100 hours to community service, exhibits and re-enactments of the first Girl Scout meeting. To learn more go to www.gsneny100.org.
