Queens Medical Billing Clerk Arrested For Stealing $61,500

NEW YORK, NY (05/26/2010)(readMedia)-- A medical billing clerk was arrested Thursday for stealing $61,500 by getting an insurance company to pay 182 claims for medical treatments she never received, the New York State Insurance Department reported.

The Insurance Department's Frauds Bureau arrested Magdalena Lubiejewska, 37, following an investigation by the Bureau.

Lubiejewska, who formerly resided on 63rd Drive in Rego Park, is accused of preparing the phony insurance claims and submitting them to an Oxford health insurance plan for payment to herself. She sent in the claims during a four-year period when she was employed in the office of a Manhattan physician.

Oxford became suspicious when the company noticed the unusually large number of claims submitted under Lubiejewska's name. On occasion, she sent the insurer as many as four or five claims a week for payment.

Lubiejewska was charged with grand larceny and insurance fraud. She was being held in the Queens County lockup, but could be released under $10,000 bail provided she surrenders her U.S. passport. She faces a possible sentence of 15 years in prison if she is convicted.

A hearing will be scheduled in Queens County Court. The office of Queens County District Attorney Richard A. Brown is prosecuting the case.
