SUNY Binghamton Student Wins Scholarship
Efforts of Student Recruiter on Behalf of Blood Drives Results in Scholarship
WEST HENRIETTA, NY (06/05/2008)(readMedia)-- OPPORTUNITY FOR COVERAGE
WHAT:
SUNY Binghamton Student Eric Dohrenwend of Highland, NY, received a $500 scholarship from the American Red Cross, New York – Penn Region for his efforts in helping the University secure 1,103 units of blood from blood drives he sponsored or helped run during the course of the academic year. The University collected 144 more units more this year than the previous academic year.
WHY:
The American Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region and the State University of New York (SUNY) have partnered in a scholarship program, which is available to students throughout the SUNY system who have actively worked to increase blood donations on their school campuses for the 2007-2008 academic year. The goal of the partnership is to educate college students about the need for blood donations and to encourage them to become consistent blood donors.
Students who are nominated for the scholarship are required to participate on a sponsor team. Each team nominates one student who has either created a program to recruit new donors, or who has personally worked to increase the number of donors attending blood drives or who has assisted in developing a new sponsor group. There is one winner per school for each academic year. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate in the program.
Phi Delta Epsilon, of which Dohrenwend is a member, Alpha Phi Omega, Chabad House and SUNY Binghamton administration, were the University sponsor groups, which secured the 1,103 units of blood this year.
