GAFFNEY, SC (05/01/2013)(readMedia)-- During its Alumni Weekend events (April 19-21), Limestone College recognized Lancaster [29720] resident Sara Jernigan Eddins as its Alumna of the Year.

The award is presented to a Limestone College graduate who has provided distinguished and meritorious service to the College, and engaged in voluntary services at the local, state, and/or national level.

"My Limestone experience created a desire within me to encourage young minds. Hailing from a small community, I learned to explore and appreciate ideas of students and professors with other viewpoints," said Sara, a member of Limestone's Class of 1960. "This led to my wish to contribute to my community by teaching and playing an active role in politics."

She was named Professor of the Year for the University of South Carolina-Lancaster and retired as an instructor from Lancaster High School. She has served as a member of the Lancaster City Council, the Lancaster Planning Commission, Habitat for Humanity Board, the South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs, the Lancaster County Council of the Arts, and others. Among her many accomplishments are spearheading an effort to restore Lancaster's Old Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1860.

A current member of Limestone's Board of Trustees, Sara and her husband, Mack, reside in Lancaster and have six children.

Limestone College is a four-year, liberal arts institution with its main campus in Gaffney, SC and seven sites located throughout the state.
