YONKERS, NY (12/01/2011)(readMedia)-- As momentum builds for a fairer state tax system, members of the 99% and community organizations will participate in canvasses across the state this Saturday, December 3rd to encourage their neighbors to support progressive taxation in NY. Locally, canvassers organized through Community Voices Heard will ask residents to sign the "I am a 99%er" pledge, contact their local lawmaker, and put up a lawn sign identifying themselves as a member of the 99% and supporter of progressive taxation. The millionaires tax, which is set to expire on December 31st of this year and is opposed by Governor Cuomo, would give the wealthiest New Yorkers a $5 billion tax break, largely paid for by draconian cuts to education and public services.

Canvassers will talk to thousands of New Yorkers in State Senate and Assembly districts in Saratoga, Troy, Syracuse, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Yonkers, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, New York City and Long Island about how extending the additional income tax surcharge on the state's highest earners could prevent more drastic budget cuts, and create opportunities to invest in job creation and infrastructure in New York State. News reports earlier this week indicated that some upstate Republicans may reconsider their stance to end the tax, given vast support for extending the tax from their constituents and the dramatic lack of millionaires in their districts and now Governor Cuomo seems to be opening to progressive taxation options.
