ROCHESTER, NY (01/25/2018) There is so much to love in the Nazareth College Arts Center's February lineup, including a night of dance rhythms performed by one of today's top Latin bands, the continuation of our popular family programming with the addition of a sensory-friendly performance, and a hilarious evening of improv with The Second City!
It all kicks off with three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre on Saturday, February 10 at 8 p.m. in the Callahan Theater, located in the Nazareth College Arts Center at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y., 14618. Originally from Havana, Tiempo Libre's seven classically trained Afro-Cuban musicians have made it their mission to share their homeland's rich musical tradition with the masses using beats that will make you want to get up and dance! Over the past 14 years, the band has traveled around the globe and has been featured on Dancing with the Stars, Live from Lincoln Center, and The Tonight Show. Tickets are $25.00-$35.00.
Next, we welcome Childsplay-one of the country's top touring professional theatre companies-for Go, Dog! Go, based on the best-selling children's book, on Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Callahan Theater. The cast of this beloved preschool favorite has gone to the dogs-with cars, hats, audience participation, and even a wild game of ball-in a musical romp that is full of surprises, color, clowning, and vaudeville. A second performance at 4 p.m. will be offered for families with children with autism or other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities.
"We are happy to offer sensory-friendly performances for our family shows," said Rita Mannelli, executive director of the Nazareth College Arts Center. "The Arts Center is committed to creating an environment where all patrons feel welcomed and comfortable."
In order to create a sensory-friendly environment for the 4 p.m. performance, the Arts Center works with the artists to make simple adjustments to the performance such as adjusting audio levels, stage lighting, and any other audio or visual elements that could be startling. In addition, Nazareth College Education and Health and Human Services students will work alongside ushers to provide support.
The Arts Center will also offer a quiet space outside the theater and fidget toys for audience members to take in the theater or enjoy outside the space. Tickets for both performances of Go, Dog! Go are $15.00-$20.00.
Last but not least, The Second City takes the stage on Thursday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Callahan Theater. Straight from Chicago's famous improv factory that launched the careers of dozens of comedy superstars including Dan Aykroyd, Jane Lynch, Stephen Colbert, John Belushi, and Tina Fey, The Second City returns with all-new sketches alongside routines made famous by stars you know and love. May contain adult or mature content. Tickets are $25.00-$35.00.
