5 Congregations caravan together to cast their ballots on Sunday

NEW YORK, NY (10/24/2019) (readMedia)-- There is excitement in Newburgh about the opportunity to vote early! Six pastors are bringing parishioners and anyone who wants to join them from churches in the City of Newburgh to the Early Voting site at the Newburgh Activity Center. For the first time in New York State history, voters have the option of voting on a Saturday or Sunday.

Historically Churches have played a central role as a seat of community empowerment as well as spirituality in Newburgh's predominantly African American community.

Decisions made about housing, transportation, policing and job creation are made by the people who show up to vote. That's why we want every member of every African American church congregation to be a voter on Election Day. Communities of color have been underrepresented at every level of government and that disparity is reflected in government policy. Martin Luther King, Jr. Once said, "Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressman and government officials, but the voters of this country."

"Our church memberships are excited to stand together and vote together", said Pastor Wilie Mays. "We have to exercise the right that is ours and make our voices heard. We've seen the outcomes when we don't engage. This is too important for us not to."

In January, the New York State legislature passed - and Governor Cuomo signed into law - early voting, which gives voters 9 days before Election Day to vote beginning Saturday October 26 and ending on Sunday November 3rd. Voters can still cast their ballots on Election Day on November 5.

The 2019 New York State budget also included $14.7 million for electronic poll-books and $10 million for counties to implement early voting. New York is now the 38th state in the nation to pass and fund early voting, and the 35th state with electronic poll-books.

 The convoy will start at The Cathedral at the House, 131 Broadway in the City of Newburgh with Hudson Valley Christian Church and move up Broadway stopping at New Life Pentecostal Church, at 173 Broadway. They will stop at the corner of Prospect Street to pick up Calvary Full Gospel Church and the Faith Family Church before arriving at the City of Newburgh Activity Center, the poll site for the City of Newburgh, Town of Newburgh and New Windsor residents.
