Statement on House File 525 by the Iowa State Education Association

Executive Director, Mary Jane Cobb

DES MOINES, IA (03/11/2011)(readMedia)-- Today the Republican party in the Iowa House passed a misguided piece of legislation that strikes at the heart of collective bargaining rights for Iowa workers. The collective bargaining law in Iowa has worked for over 35 years and does not need to be dismantled.

Instead of stripping educators of their rights and forcing middle-class workers to take wage and benefits cuts, the Republican leadership should be looking to invest more in education and the public services that are critical to our communities.

Giving teachers and education support professionals a voice in their schools is key to assuring quality public schools.

Teachers and the educational professionals who support our students want the right to come together and work for better public schools and a better future for their students and their families.
