States Largest Grocery Work Union Throws Support Behind Brooklyn Navy Yard Development
Agreement Reached Excluding Walmart Store
WESTBURY, NEW YORK (11/11/2011)(readMedia)-- United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500, New York States largest grocery workers Union, has thrown its full support behind the continued development of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Over the last few months representatives of Local 1500 have worked closely with New York City Council members, the Office of Speaker Christine Quinn and the Bloomberg administration to settle any concerns it had regarding Walmart and the communities need for a full scale supermarket.
" We are have been ensured by all parties that Walmart will not be a tenant in this development," said Patrick Purcell , spokes person for UFCW Local 1500. " More importantly, the neighborhood will benefit from a brand new, state of the art, full scale Supermarket that we are confident will be employee over 200 unionized employees and will be built with members of the New York City Building Trades Union. This development is an example of what we can do when the parties understand that every neighbor hood deserves good food, good jobs and good health," Purcell concluded.
UFCW Local 1500 represents over 23,000 grocery workers employed in supermarkets in Long Island, the five boroughs, Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties. Supermarket workers represented by UFCW Local 1500 inlcude Pathmark, Stop and Shop, King Kullen, Fairway, Shop Rite and several other operators.
