Sugarless Wednesday is February 25

Children cut back on sweets

ALBANY, NY (02/11/2009)(readMedia)-- Sugarless Wednesday, an award-winning program devoted to teaching children about healthy nutrition choices, will be celebrated February 25 in New York State. The event, sponsored by the New York State Dental Association, (NYSDA) is being held in conjunction with the February observance of National Children's Dental Health Month.

"Oral and overall body health are related, and this event involves curriculum and promotional activities that bring the message to both the classroom and cafeteria," said Michael Breault, D.D.S., president of NYSDA. Dr. Breault, a Schenectady periodontist, adds that Sugarless Wednesday also helps children identify hidden sugars in their diet.

Free teaching materials, event posters, stickers, and Sugarless Wednesday "survivor" certificates are available from NYSDA. Educators, parents and children can obtain details about Children's Dental Health Month programs in New York State at www.nysdental.org or by calling NYSDA at 518-465-0044.

The New York State Dental Association, founded in 1868, is one of the largest state constituents of the American Dental Association and represents more than 13,000 of the state's practicing dentists. NYSDA was recognized with the American Dental Association Golden Apple Award for dental health promotion for its 2007 Sugarless Wednesday program and in the last decade has received more than a dozen national awards for its Children's Dental Health Month programs.
