ALBANY, NY (02/21/2008)(readMedia)-- The New York State Dental Association will sponsor Sugarless Wednesday, an award-winning program devoted to helping children become more aware of non-essential sugars in their diet, on February 27. The event is being held in conjunction with the February observance of Children’s Dental Health Month.

"Our goal is to help children learn about healthy nutrition choices and the relationship between oral health and overall body health," said Dr. Stephen Gold, a pediatric dentist and president of NYSDA. "Through a variety of activities and class programs, children discover sources of hidden sugars in their diet," adds Dr. Gold.

Free teaching materials, event posters, and Sugarless Wednesday “survivor” certificates and stickers are available from NYSDA. Educators, cafeteria managers, coaches, parents and children can obtain details about Children’s Dental Health Month programs in New York State at www.nysdental.org or by calling NYSDA at 518-465-0044.

The New York State Dental Association, celebrating 140 years in 2008, is one of the largest state constituents of the American Dental Association and represents more than 13,000 of the state's practicing dentists. In the last decade, NYSDA has received more than a dozen national awards for its Children's Dental Health Month programs. Sugarless Wednesday initiatives in 2007 were recognized with the American Dental Association Golden Apple Award for dental health promotion to the public.
