Syracuse Man Accused Of Lying To Get Health Benefits

NEW YORK, NY (10/13/2009)(readMedia)-- The former employee of an Upstate New York health insurance company was arrested Thursday for falsifying his relationship with his girlfriend and her child so he could obtain $9,200 in health care benefits for them, the New York State Insurance Department reported.

Keoliver R. McCall, 35, is accused of falsely claiming that he was married to the woman and was the father of her child when he obtained health insurance benefits from Excellus Health Care Inc. for the woman and child. In fact, McCall was unmarried and had no dependents.

McCall, of Watertree Drive, East Syracuse, was employed by Excellus as a customer service representative when he obtained the insurance. The health insurer paid medical and dental claims for the two ineligible dependents under a family benefits plan.

State police arrested McCall after an investigation by Senior Investigator Thomas F. Hurley Jr. of the Insurance Departments Frauds Bureau.

McCall was charged with third degree grand larceny and falsifying business records. He could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison if he is convicted. A hearing will be scheduled in Syracuse City Court.

The case is being prosecuted by Onondaga County Assistant Chief District Attorney Patrick Quinn.
