SPRINGFIELD, IL (09/28/2014)(readMedia)-- Johnny R. Miller of Tamms, Illinois, the Assistant Adjutant General-Army, was promoted to major general during a promotion ceremony at the Illinois Military Academy on Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois, Sept. 27.
"Major General Miller is one of the most respected individuals in all of the Illinois National Guard," said Daniel Krumrei, the Adjutant General. "His care and concern for Soldiers and families has been unwavering as long as I've known him."
Miller assumed duties as the Assistant Adjutant General - Army in January 2011.
He assists the Adjutant General in the command and control of approximately 10,000 Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers.
He was commissioned in 1984 in the Illinois Army National Guard, through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps' early commissioning program at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri.
Miller is both armor and field artillery branch qualified. His assignments include company commander, battalion personnel and operations officer, battalion executive officer, battalion commander, brigade plans and operations officer, brigade executive officer, brigade commander, and Illinois Joint Staff operations officer.
"All the success I've had is from mentors and folks looking out for me and helping make me better day in and day out," said Miller. "When you surround yourself with great people they will always make you look good and I have been fortunate."
Miller deployed twice, in 2003 stateside, in support of operation Noble Eagle and in 2009 as the senior liaison officer with the polish task force white eagle to Afghanistan.
Miller noted the significant impact of the 9-11 attacks on his life and his peers.
"All these experiences have made me who I am and made us stronger as an organization," said Miller.
As a civilian, Miller is the business excellence site facilitator for Dyno-Nobel Incorporated's Wolf Lake facility, where he has worked for 24 years. The facility is a manufacturer of commercial explosive initiation systems for the mining and construction industry. He is responsible for coordinating and planning programs, training, and activities to support the transformation of the facility.
"I take great pride when the good guys make it; when the people of quality, ethics, morals and intellect rise to the top of their profession and ours," said Krumrei. "It's been my privilege to work for him and with him."
