HALFMOON, NY (01/25/2013)(readMedia)-- This is the time of year that the public anticipates that their cravings for Thin Mints are fulfilled, but to millions of girls, the Girl Scout Cookie Program provides an opportunity to discover their own skills, connect through teamwork, and take-action by achieving their goals.

All Girl Scout boxes have a new look and purpose this year, which is to effectively showcase the benefits of the program. The boxes have been redesigned to elevate and tell the story of the significance of the program. Each box includes stories of what girls do today in Girl Scouting, the fun they have doing it and all that girls learn from the experience.

Since 1917, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has helped make Girl Scouting the premier leadership development experience for girls. By participating in this program, girls learn five financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills which include goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Customers will not only receive a delicious treat, they are helping girls to be future business leaders and to make a difference in their communities.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is one of the few youth-oriented programs in the country providing its participants the ability to decide how to direct the proceeds generated through their business activity, whether it's for a science program, trip, community service project or a unique goal designated by the girls.

The Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) is excited to announce that the Cookie Program runs from January 21 through April 7. Selling cookies helps all girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident, and resourceful citizens – while having fun, too!

New this year at our council, is the Gift of Caring Program –Operation: Send A Smile! Customers can support the Girl Scout Movement by donating money to any Girl Scout selling cookies and purchase a box (or more) of cookies to be sent to military personnel. GSNENY will handle the distribution of the donated cookies at the end of the Cookie Program.
