The Prostate Center of Community Care Physicians holds free motorcycle drawing to raise awareness of cancer

The Prostate Center is giving away a 2010 Victory Hammer 8-ball on September 13, 2011 to get people talking about prostate cancer screening

LATHAM, NY (07/21/2011)(readMedia)-- The Prostate Center of Community Care Physicians, PC announces its Check Your Engines™ motorcycle drawing that will award a 2010 Victory Hammer® 8-Ball Cruiser to one winner. Now until September 6, 2011, male and female residents of NY over the age of 18 can enter this free drawing that will be held on September 13, 2011 at a press conference at the Capital Region Health Park in Latham.

The Prostate Center of Community Care Physicians offers free prostate cancer screenings, including PSA blood testing and a digital rectal exam, every Friday from 8am to 4pm at the Capital Region Health Park in Latham. To encourage men to start talking about prostate cancer and screening, The Prostate Center partnered with the American Cancer Society and The Prostate Net to launch the Check Your Engines™ motorcycle drawing. This campaign is centered on the idea that men will schedule maintenance for their bike, car, or truck, but they neglect their own health maintenance. So, it's time for men to check their engines.

"Men may be reluctant to sit around and talk about their health, especially prostate screening," said Robert Desjardins, Operations Manager of The Prostate Center. "Our goal with this campaign is to create a buzz around the free bike drawing so we can raise awareness of prostate cancer and make it a part of men's conversations. We know men like bikes and cars, and we recognize that there is a strong motorcycle culture here in New York. A large portion of these motorcycle riders are 45 years old or older; the same age when men should start talking to their doctors about prostate screening."

Now, interested people can enter the drawing online, a new feature of the campaign. Formerly, people could only enter by visiting The Prostate Center table at local events or by getting screened through The Prostate Center. With the addition of online entry, there are now 5 ways to enter:

1. Get screened for prostate cancer at the Prostate Center if eligible (receive 3 tickets if you are screened).

2. Refer someone for a prostate screening at The Prostate Center (receive 1 ticket).

3. Visit The Prostate Center of Community Care Physicians booth when you see it at events and play the 'wheel of knowledge' game about prostate cancer.

4. Enter to win online by visiting www.theprostatecenter.org (can enter twice per month per email address).

5. Have The Prostate Center screen your employees at your office location. All men screened will be entered to win (receive 3 tickets if screened).

"Although only men get screened for prostate cancer, we didn't want to exclude women from the drawing," said Desjardins. "Women are often the driving force behind men going to the doctor and getting their necessary screenings. So, we want them to be knowledgeable about prostate cancer as well."

American Cancer Society guidelines recommend that men make an informed decision with their doctor about whether to be tested for prostate cancer. Men should not be tested without learning about what we know and don't know about the risks and possible benefits of testing and treatment. Generally, annual screening starting at age 50 is recommended for men at average risk for prostate cancer. Men with a higher risk of prostate cancer (African American men, men with a family history of the disease, obese men), should be screened starting at age 45. If more than one risk factor is present, screening may start as early as age 40.
