Free oral cancer screenings July 30

ALBANY, NY (07/22/2008)(readMedia)-- In an effort to educate the public about oral cancer, members of the Fourth District Dental Society, a component of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) serving Northeastern New York, will be conducting free oral cancer screenings at the Saratoga Racetrack on Wednesday, July 30, from noon-4:00 p.m.

"Oral cancer screenings are quick, painless and can save lives," said Dr. Stephen Gold, president of NYSDA, who notes that at least 20 individuals with suspicious lesions have been identified in the past five years at this annual event and that those participants were referred for follow-up treatment.

Knowing the risk factors and taking steps to prevent precancerous lesions from developing can help limit the influence oral cancer can have on your life. Early detection, a healthy lifestyle and regular dental visits are also important. Most people are not aware that dentists check for signs of oral cancer during routine dental exams.

Racing fans can visit the screening area on July 30 at tables located in front of the track's customer service building.

The New York State Dental Association, celebrating 140 years in 2008, is a constituent of the American Dental Association and represents more than 13,000 dentists practicing in New York State.
