For 40 years Saratoga Associates has been bringing sustainable design to projects and municipalities throughout New York State, across the country and around the world. Saratoga Associates is a landscape architecture, planning, engineering and architecture firm with offices in Saratoga Springs and New York City.
The firm, of more than 60 employees, is celebrating its fourth decade in business as it continues to grow. The most significant growth within the firm has been in the New York City office where the number of staff has doubled in two years. “This is an exciting time for the firm,” said William Kuhl, Vice President and Senior Principal. “With the rapid growth out of our New York City office we are expanding our capabilities and strengths which is leading to the need for more employees.” Kuhl joined the firm in 2006 tasked with strengthening the New York City office, and with his vast experience and working knowledge of the market made an immediate impact.
The New York City office continues to have an ever-growing impact on the metropolitan region. Recent work includes community-visioning workshops throughout Long Island, landscape architectural services across the city for the New York City School Construction Authority, and interior design services for the new office of a Bermuda holding company. Some of the New York office’s newest projects include a campus massing study at Rutgers University, Roosevelt Island soccer field replacement and comfort station restoration, and site design services for the Scarsdale community center.
The firm was created in the summer of 1968 as the Robert F. Bristol Landscape Architect a firm in Diamond Point, New York. A few years later on a snowy Thanksgiving evening Bristol and a friend, Jack Litynski, decided to join forces. Two years later the partnership expanded into The Saratoga Associates and several individuals joined shareholders at that time. “From the beginning our approach was to be a multi-disciplinary firm and to bring the most talented people in each field, under one roof,” said Bristol, CEO and Senior Principal of Saratoga Associates. “In being a client focused firm, our first goal is meet and then exceed their needs, but what makes us unique is that we have always advocated for sustainable and environmentally friendly designs.”
Of the hundreds of projects that Saratoga Associates has been involved with over the past four decades, some of their most noteworthy work in recent years has taken place at: Massry Center for the Arts, Mohonk Mountain House Spa and Skating facilities, Arts Center of Old Forge, Saratoga Race Course Gateways and Jockey House, The New York State Bar Association, National Museum of Dance, Saratoga Retirement Center, to name a few. The firm’s New York City office has a storied history of projects in the region, most notably the award-winning Battery Bosque, the Front Street Courtyards, Governor’s Island, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Queens College, and comprehensive plans throughout the New York metropolitan region.
Saratoga Associates has enjoyed long-term working relationships with many clients including SPAC as well as the New York State Racing Association, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
