6th annual Military Benefit Car Show starts Friday at the D.C. National Guard Armory

The 6th Annual Military Benefit Car Show will be held at the D.C. National Guard Armory Friday through Saturday in honor of those who served during the Vietnam War. The event is open to the public.

WASHINGTON, DC (02/26/2015)(readMedia)-- The 6th Annual Military Benefit Car Show will be at the D.C. National Guard Armory Friday through Sunday. The event is sponsored by the District of Columbia National Guard in community partnership with the Unity Thunder Car Club and Operation Homefront.

The three-day event will include a ceremony commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War by honoring Vietnam veterans for their service, sacrifice and valor.

Doors open to the public Friday 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Besides recognizing Vietnam veterans, the purpose of the event is to benefit members of the D.C. National Guard, veterans and their families. General admission is $10. Children under 12 are free. Event parking is $5.

A variety of vehicles including classic, custom, street cars, muscle cars and even motorcycles and choppers will be on hand for the show, which gets bigger and better every year. A special collection of vintage Chevrolet Corvettes is one of this year's highlights.

The Unity Thunder Car Club has a storied history of supporting charitable organizations and community improvement projects.

Operation Homefront is a charity that provides emergency assistance for U.S. military troops, the families they leave behind, and wounded servicemen when they return home. The organization raises funds to provide emergency, financial, and morale assistance to families while troops are participating in a tour of duty. Since its creation in 2002 Operation Homefront has met over 741,000 needs of military families and military personnel returning from duty.

On Saturday, members of the Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle club will meet at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. to lead a ride from the memorial to the armory. The ride is in honor of Vietnam veterans and those who died during the war. The procession will arrive at the Armory between 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Patriot Guard Riders is a charity made up of hundreds of veterans and nonveterans who make it a point to provide a presence at military funerals and home comings. They also provide honor guards in their quest to ensure dignity, honor and respect for those who have served and those who have died fighting for their country.

Vietnam veterans will be recognized during the car show following the motorcycle tribute.
